Targets by Lisa Rae Winant

A nice and calm fall day lies ahead in New Hampshire as the old, cranky and non-caring woman drags another cigarette. Approaching her is a young energetic boy in a black suit who looks to be a magician holding a puppet rabbit in one hand while a magic wand in another.

"Hello ma'am, may I show you a magic trick? I'm more than positive you will enjoy it!"

The old lady gives him a glance, takes another drag of her butt and turns the other way.

The boy quickly gets in front of her again. "Ma'am, please give me a chance! I have been designing a trick that will change the revolution of magic".

The old lady finishes her drag and blows the smoke into the face of the magician with no emotion.

"Ma'am, I beg you for your patience. I just need to borrow this hat-" The boy reaches for the lady's hat without permission and has his hand quickly smacked down. She looks at the boy flat-faced and still doesn't say a word. The child is shocked by the strength the lady has for her age.

The old lady suddenly takes off her glasses and tucks them in the v-neck of her collared shirt. She grabs the child's puppet rabbit, "Face over there!" the lady murmurs as she points in the other direction.

The boy turns around as the old lady takes the last drag of her cigarette. Before exhaling she takes off her hat, stuffs the rabbit inside and exhales into the hat before putting it back upon her head. "Turn around" She says.

The boy turns around noticing she does not have the rabbit in her hand. "Where's my rabbit?"

The old lady takes off her hat with smoke coming out and pulls the rabbit from inside. "Cool magic trick ya little shit."

  1. Fun story! Now fix all the little "i" typos, the occasional punctuation error, and the final "while walking away" before I pop a grade upon this piece. Puff on that magic, will ya?!

Look forward to seeing your impassioned blog post by Tuesday. Hmm, will it be about soccer perhaps?

    Cheers,
    Dana
